Science of Jiujitsu by Demian Maia
Demian Maia is a relatively new face to UFC fans, but is showcasing some awesome jiu-jitsu in all of his fights. There has been a slowdown of great jiujitsu artists in MMA, but Demian is bringing the trend back. Maia won his fight last week against UFC veteran Jason McDonald, and showcased some textbook groundwork in his fight.
Demian has also torn up the pure grappling circuit, with many impressive wins, including win over legend and now MMA fighter Ronaldo “Jacare” de Souza, and the much larger Gabriel Gonzaga. In MMA, he has submitted all but two of his opponents. Demian Maia is sure to rise up in the ranks of the UFC, and I guarantee you will be seeing more of him very soon. This may lead to a new sparked interest in brazilian jiu-jitsu, and his dvd set is a great way to learn.
The Science of Jiu-jitsu has 6 volumes, from defending the guard pass, to escaping side control and more in between. Please check our site in the near future for an in depth review on volume 4 : Escaping Side Control.
Atama Kimono’s Gold Weave Gi
You may have noticed Saturday that UFC Welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre walked into the arena with a plain black gi, absent of the multitude of sponsor logos that plague the shirts of most other fighters.
This is most likely due to the fact that Affliction was banned from the UFC, which was Georges’s biggest sponsor. Georges may have decided to not have any sponsor due to alliance with Affliction, but there has also been some speculation that either the UFC or Affliction has paid him to have NO sponsor.
St. Pierre came in with and Atama Kimono. These are very popular for brazilian jiu-jitsu players, and are a favorite for many black belts. Their most popular is the Gold Weave, which has the soft and light feel of a single weave, while having the strength and durability of a double weave. Any serious brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner needs a quality gi, and Atama makes some of the best.

Brock Lesnar -DeathClutch Walk out Shirt UFC 87
Brock Lesnar’s recent victory over Heath Herring in UFC 87, has gained plenty of attention. Lesnar is a NCAA wrestling champion and a WWE superstar who recently began a career in MMA. Although, many people don’t believe that Lesnar is the “real deal”, he proved his strength and power by dominating a very formidable opponent with Heath Herring. Also, the UFC president, Dana White seems to be impressed, and we will probably be seeing more Brock Lesnar UFC fights very soon.
Regardless if you love or hate Lesnar, his DeathClutch walkout shirt from UFC 87 is pretty bad-ass. It looks like a cross between an “affliction style” shirt and a warriorwear shirt. Considering that Brock Lesnar is the owner of DeathClutch you will be seeing more of these shirts as well.
Gameness Pearl Gi
Recently the price of gi’s across all companies has risen and it is getting difficult to find a nice gi under $150 dollars. One of the more affordable gi’s is the gameness pearl, coming in at a little over $100. The Gameness gi is a single weave gi that is very light, good for summer months, and fast drying. The collar is also made of rubber, which makes it extra fast drying(the collar usually takes the longest to dry), helps keep bacteria from soaking into it, and is also much tougher for someone to grab and manipulate you or choke you.
The Gameness Pearl is very similar to the Koral gi in this respect. Koral is one of, it not the most popular gi recently, but their price usually turn away newer people in the sport. Try the Pearl for a good alternative!
The Pearl is pre-shrunk and comes in blue, white, and black.
The KO Fightgear Muay Thai Pads
The
KO Fightgear Muay Thai pads can be categorized as one of the best made Thai pads for MMA. They are durable and also very affordable. With a Velcro fastening system the pads are very easy to secure as well as take off, perfect for switching training routines in a flash. Most importantly, is the construction of these pads are very robust, the firmness stays consistent well after its broken-in. For even the most powerful strikes the leather has been triple stitched in an “x” seam into the padding.
Truth Fightwear MMA Striking Training Glove
I am always on the lookout for affordable gear that is high in quality. Truth Fightwear never disappoints me. Their MMA Striking glove is almost identical to the quality and make of the Combat Sports International version, but at almost half the price!
These gloves are the finger-loop style, with the larger area of padding on the front. Some people prefer this style of the traditional individual finger gloves. It is important to note that any glove like this takes time to break in because of the finger loops, they can be quite uncomfortable at first. After the initial break in period I am sure you will love these gloves. These gloves even improve on the CSI verision by having a bigger velcro area for a more secure and reliable closure.
